Head of a Young Woman

  • marble
  • Greece
  • 100 x 88 x 61mm
  • 75/38

This tiny Greek marble head is nearly 2,400 years old and unidentified, though it bears a likeness to the celebrated Venus de Milo in the Louvre in Paris, made about two centuries later. Its size, style and flattened back suggest it was originally from a votive plaque – an object used to seek favour from the gods.
