Contemporary British Prints and Drawings from the Wakefield Collection

This exhibition is now closed

Shortly before his death, Lord Wakefield gave ₤3000 to the British Council to be spent on establishing a permanent collection of British watercolours, drawings and prints for circulation abroad. The collection was duly assembled by Campbell Dodgson, former keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Musuem.

During 1948 and 1949 the collection toured Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. The British Council has recorded the tour's approximate itinerary and illustrations of the works.

In Christchurch the works were hung in alphabetical order by the artists' surname, which generated a short but sharp correspondence in the local newspaper. Click on 'ALL IMAGES' above to follow this debate.
