Recent British Sculpture

This exhibition is now closed

This exhibition was arranged for Canada, Australia and New Zealand by the British Council and was opened by the Mayor of Christchurch Mr George Manning. The exhibiting artists were Robert Adams, Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick, Hubert Dalwood, Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Meadows, Henry Moore and Eduardo Paolozzi.

Mounting the many bronze exhibits presented a problem which was solved by the use of uncemented Vibrapac blocks. Some shell bronzes had to be handled very carefully as they were particularly fragile.

A grant of ₤1,000 for the exhibition was made by the Arts Advisory Council which was shared by gthe galleries in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

To support the exhibition several films were screened at the Gallery including Figures in a Landscape (Barbara Hepworth) and The Sculptor Speaks (Henry Moore).

The exhibition was seen by 1245 people. Photography for private use was allowed. The takings for the exhibition were ₤86-13-0.
