Nicolas Jasmin: Only for your eyes

This exhibition is now closed

This work is a minute-and-a-half of extreme surface tension, from a master of high-intensity editing. Jasmin's raw material here comes from an unlikely place – a mountain-climbing scene in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Slicing up the footage and then splitting and mirroring each slice, Jasmin extracts menacing new energy from a moment of action movie suspense. Lengths of red climbing rope twitch, snap and flex like a live thing at the centre of the screen. As it pulls frantically against its own reflection, the rope seems to be holding together – but barely – an image that constantly threatens to tear apart.
