Behind the scenes

A self confessed letterpress enthusiast I really enjoy the qualities offered with handprinted books - the tactile quality of the printed metal type faces slightly embossed into the surface of the paper, it's something that digital technology would never have a part to play in or so I thought.

But here, to my surprise, is a monotype caster, a machine invented very much before digital technology came to the fore, being run by a computer. Brilliant - though I have to say the movements and rythmic sounds of the monotype caster beat a computer screen and hard drive hands down.

The Printing Museum in Wellington have an operational monotype caster, the only one currently in operation in Australasia...if you felt the need to branch out from digital technology that is.
