Scott Flanagan is concerned with two kinds of seeing: how the eye receives and processes colour, tone and texture, and how the mind perceives and translates that information to create meaning. The tendency of the eye to convert abstract forms into recognisable patterns is a basic human response; this, Flanagan contends, applies as readily to viewing a painting made up of layered yellow squares as to finding shapes in cliff faces or clouds, or even ‘miraculously’ seeing the face of the Virgin Mary in an oil stain or a slice of bread.
