The collaborative work of Edwards+Johann encompasses a broad range of visual arts practices, challenging the boundaries of making and viewing contemporary art. This moving image diptych references the process of creating a portrait and the practice of painting. Edwards+Johann's performative role-playing explores the history of European portrait painting and its Pacific translations, figure-ground relationships and an investigation of the self. Their peculiar costumes and the interchangeable nature of their characters reveal some essence of being – both other and ourselves, or maybe ourselves discovered through the other.
