This rather gloomy and restrained portrait of the building contractor, art collector and Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū benefactor James Jamieson (1842–1927) highlights Raymond McIntyre’s interest in a limited colour palette and simplified tonal contrasts. This, along with his use of thin, transparent layers of oil paint, highlights the influence of the American painter James McNeill Whistler, whom he greatly admired.
