"One of the finest exhibitions to come to Christchurch"

An exhibition of early British watercolours arranged by the Empire Art Loan Exhibitions Society was described by W S Baverstock as "one of the finest exhibitions yet to come to Christchurch." (Star-Sun, 2 February 1950).

It featured 158 watercolours painted between 1750 and 1850, assembled from public collections in Britain. Artists included Constable, Fuseli, Girton, Rowlandson, Sandby and Turner.

It was followed, in 1953 by a similar exhibition covering British watercolours between 1850 and 1914.
