About the artist

Raeburn, Sir Henry (Scotland, b.1756, d.1823)
Engraving by William Nicholson, after Raeburn's self portrait in the National Gallery of Scotland.

Leading Scottish portraitist Henry Raeburn also attracted English clients, including Thomas Tyrwhitt-Drake, MP for Amersham from 1795, and his wife Anne (née Wickham). Thomas was the eldest surviving son of William Drake, from whom he inherited his MP role. Anne was much younger, a wealthy eighteen-year-old heiress when they married in 1780; they had ten children when Raeburn painted them, and four to come.
