Behind the scenes

It's a word that makes our hearts skip a little faster round here.

It's the thrill of a new show in the offing, combined with the knowledge of the hundred little things that need to be done before the opening day. That's even more true with Burster Flipper Wobbler Dripper Spinner Stacker Shaker Maker, which is not only a mouthful of a title, but a whopper of a show, featuring works by eleven terrific artists from New Zealand and Australia in our specially fitted-out ArtBox on the St Asaph/Madras corner. After months of planning, it's always nice to get the installation underway, and this week we were pleased to welcome Christchurch artist Tony Bond into the space to hang his work, a brilliantly ambiguous 43-piece installation entitled Swoop. Those little spiky white things at the far end of the table are the shelves on which Tony's ceramic thingamyjigs balance on some fairly rakish angles. From their vantage point on the ArtBox's highest wall, they'll be watching over the space as it gradually fills up with colour, texture, sound and movement, all ready for the big reveal on Saturday February 15th (BTW, did we mention our family fun day?).
