The Hanging Sky in Wellington

Behind the scenes

Having been lucky enough to attend the intimate opening of our exhibition Shane Cotton: The Hanging Sky at the IMA in Brisbane in December it was great to be part of the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū whanau again last Friday evening in Wellington.

The show at City Gallery Wellington was a much larger and more glitsy affair and was accompanied by the launch of the Gallery's magnificent catalogue.

After showing in Brisbane and Sydney it was like homecoming for these wonderful paintings, particularly appropriate at City Gallery, which had hosted the first large survey show of Shane's work almost exactly ten years ago in 2003.

After director Elizabeth Caldwell opened the exhibition, Justin spoke on behalf of our Gallery and launched the long-awaited publication which goes with the exhibition.

Next day in front of a big crowd, Justin engaged Shane in a fascinating and quite intimate conversation about the work itself.

A proud day for Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū!
