Church windows

Behind the scenes

Another print in our collection has succumbed to some interesting research.

Looking at every website and every guidebook to churches in Britain's Lake District failed to produce a single lead to explain this 'church near Ambleside'. But an eagle-eyed church historian spotted OUR church depicted in stained glass in another church nearby. In the window of St Mary's Church Ambleside is this Victorian glass:

Look closely at the right-hand church, called St Anne's, imagine it flipped horizontally, and bingo you have our church. So this was the old St Anne's Church, demolished before 1812 when the new St Anne's was built. This in turn was deconsecrated in 1940 and is now private housing.

Which way the church really faced is impossible to say as either the printer or the glazier could very easily have reversed the image.

We love solving these little mysteries and thank Steve Bulmer and Martin Norgate for their assistance. Have a look at Steve Bulmer's splendid church history website and Martin Norgate's everything Lake District site for more information.
