The Clean in Christchurch

The Clean

The Clean

We're excited here at Christchurch Art Gallery that The Clean are playing live in Christchurch tomorrow night – it's always a treat to see them perform live but more so than ever this year!

Take a look at their video for Anything Could Happen, shot here in Christchurch around 30 years ago. Gothic ruins, rubbish tips, Victorian graveyards, the vast expanse of Hagley Park, a sickly dandelion, the garden city – 30 years on and somethings seemingly never change – you just gotta love this town.

Even better still check out The Clean's claustrophobic video for Getting Older with its beautiful views of the inner-city Christchurch alleyways behind Smith's Bookshop on Manchester Street. Dodgy brick buildings that went on to become the upmarket Sol Square before it was devastated by the February quake. Filmed by Ronnie van Hout around 1982 it was banned from TVNZ back in the day – I suspect more for the song's lyrics rather than the actual video – but what a fantastic view of some of the more obscure parts of the Christchurch CBD and what a fricken awesome song. I really hope they play it live tomorrow night.
