Erring on the side of caution

Behind the scenes

To err is human, to forgive divine. Alexander Pope (1688–1744)

We've certainly done some erring over the years and we know for sure that not every item on our Collection Online is free from error. It would be nice to claim that we had planted some mistakes deliberately to stimulate a response, but the truth is more banal: records, cards, indexes and correspondence over the decades all add up to a mine of data, and human error just goes with the territory.

But we're perfectionists at heart, so if you spot anything in our collection that you think surely can't be right, then please let us know. Anything from a basic misattributed painting to something more serious like a wrongly placed apostrophe, we really do want to hear about it.

To make telling us about mistakes even easier, we have added this red 'Add a comment' box to each page.
