Life Drawing in a Victorian Setting

As William Morris said in an 1877 lecture, "There is only ONE BEST way of teaching drawing, and that is teaching the scholar to draw the human figure."

Join us for a glass of claret in the Victorian Reading Room under the stairs, and a private after-hours life drawing class with printmaker and drawing teacher Sandra Thomson and life model Lucette Hindin as the enigmatic Jane Burden. The evening includes a guided tour of the exhibition Morris & Co.

The Art of Needlework: Embroidery Workshop in the Morris Style

Saturday 14 June & Saturday 21 June, 10 am – 3 pm

Morris was a champion of the decorative arts, teaching himself how to embroider – even going so far as to pick apart original medieval examples of embroidery to learn various stitching techniques. He led the rediscovery of free-form embroidery, or art needlework, an important element of the arts and crafts movement. His daughter May Morris was a highly skilled embroiderer, and was appointed director of the embroidery department at Morris & Co.

Learn crewel stitch embroidery in the Morris style with a tutor from the Embroiderers' Guild and take home a beautiful piece of handiwork. The public is invited to watch members of the Guild demonstrate different stitching techniques in the foyer.

Venue: Education Centre. $30, all materials provided. Bookings essential as places are limited, tel 941 7382.
