Artists' biographies

Gavin Chilcott was born in Auckland in 1950. He produced his first ceramics with Errol Barnes in Springbrook, Queensland, in 1988. He has exhibited in Australia and throughout New Zealand, and is represented in museum collections in both countries. He is currently working with Ross Mitchell-Anyon in Whanganui. Gavin lives, and usually works, in Wellington.

Judy Darragh was born in Christchurch and completed a Diploma in Visual Communication and Design at the Wellington Polytechnic. She has exhibited widely in New Zealand and has works in collections around the country. Judy has spent periods as artist in residence at Queen’s College Melbourne and at the University of Canterbury. In the mid-90s she made her debut as co-director in two documentary films for TVNZ. She has recently been involved in artist-run spaces - Teststrip and more recently Cuckoo - which operate outside the dealer galleries. For the past five years Judy has been a full-time lecturer for the Visual Arts degree at the Manukau Institute of Technology in Auckland.

Andrew Drummond was born in Nelson, and received his art education at Waterloo University, Canada, from which he graduated in 1976 with honours in sculpture. Andrew has exhibited throughout New Zealand and overseas. He has been the recipient of a number of major awards, and has been artist in residence in galleries and universities in New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain. He was a Frances Hodgkins Fellow at the University of Otago in 1980. Andrew’s work is widely represented in public and private collections, including the Christchurch Art Gallery, the Govett-Brewster, the Manawatu, the Douse, the Sarjeant, the National Art Galleries, the Universities of Auckland and Otago, and the BNZ and Fletcher Challenge collections. Andrew Drummond is a senior lecturer in sculpture at the University of Canterbury, School of Fine Arts.

Robert McLeod was born and educated in Glasgow where he received a Diploma of Art, Drawing and Painting from the Glasgow School of Art. He arrived in New Zealand in 1972. Robert has exhibited widely in galleries throughout New Zealand, and is represented in public and private collections in New Zealand, Scotland and Australia. Robert has had extensive involvement in art education. He now lives and paints full-time in Wellington.

Margaret Mahy has had a long and celebrated career in children’s literature, writing for a range of age groups. She has won many awards for her writing, including the New Zealand Esther Glenn medal (five times), and the New Zealand Post Children’s Book award. Twice winner of the prestigious UK Carnegie Medal, Margaret has also been awarded the Order of New Zealand. She has enjoyed the chance of venturing into a new art form by participating in this project. Margaret lives and works in Chriistchurch.

Simon Ogden was born in England and received his art education in the Carlisle College of Art and Design, the Birmingham Polytechnic, and the Royal College of Art in London. He has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions in New Zealand, and is represented in private and public collections in New Zealand and overseas. Simon has extensive experience in art education in tertiary institutions in New Zealand, and has been the recipient of a number of awards and residencies. Among the commissioned work he has undertaken are projects for the Christchurch City Council, Canterbury Health, the NZ Historic Places Trust, the Christchurch Art Gallery, the International Festival for Youth, and the Suter Gallery. Simon is a senior lecturer in Painting, Printmaking and Drawing in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury.

Bronwyn Taylor received her education in Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury. Bronwyn has made a major contribution to art education in New Zealand throughout her professional life, with extensive involvement in curriculum development and assessment, at both secondary and tertiary levels. She has acted as examiner and judge in numerous art award competitions. Bronwyn has exhibited in solo and group shows for the past thirty years and her work in sculpture and drawing is held in public and private collections throughout New Zealand. The sequence of images she has created for these plates is an attempt to generalise her experience of the landscape from recollections of Kaituna Hill, Banks Peninsula. Bronwyn Taylor is at present President of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Art Educators, and Principal Lecturer in Art Education at the Christchurch College of Education.
