For five decades Margaret Stoddart was this country's foremost flower painter: beginning in the 1880s with precisely observed studies of native plants frequently pictured in their natural habitats, she moved on to delicately painted still lifes and by the early 1900s her painterly techniques and handling of light effects meant that in New Zealand she was well on the way to making this genre her own. Flowers into Landscape: Margaret Stoddart 1865 - 1934, shows how her work can be considered as 'representative of the taste and achievement of their time'- and enlarges our understanding of the ways women have lived and worked as artists in the colonial period and early decades of this century.
