Jennifer Queree, senior curator of decorative arts at Canterbury Museum, explores the revolutionary fashion ideas of the pre-Raphaelite, aesthetic, hygienic and socialist dress movements of the 19th century.

Corset designer Jo Drysdall and her suitably attired models explore the history, construction and modern day revival of corsetry in fashion and wearable arts.

This one-day conference convened by the Australasian Victorian Studies Association and the University of Otagoexplores the relationship between Morris and the art of everyday life – from the design of beautiful domestic interiors to his advocacy of a utopian socialism. Professor Florence Boos of the University of Iowa, distinguished Morris scholar and president of the US Morris Society, is the keynote speaker.

Morris’s lecture Art and Socialism opens the door for a musical exploration of the evolution of socialism. This unique performance of music and theatre examines the relevance of Morris’s ideas on art and commerce in contemporary society, and features works by composers Vaughan Williams, Bela Bartok, Dimitri Shostakovich, Woody Guthrie and more.

The Christchurch Art Gallery in association with the Goethe-Institute New Zealand is proud to present the winning films on the occasion of the “Human Rights Film Festival in Christchurch.
To mark the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Goethe-Institute in Germany in association with the foundation “Remembrance Responsibility and Future”, invited young filmmakers in ten countries to give their interpretation of the famous First Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in a short film with a maximum length of 20 minutes.
