GALLERY HIGHLIGHTS: 14 - 27 OCTOBER
This Friday marks the start of Beca
Heritage Week 2009. Titled Doves and Defences it explores
how Christchurch has been shaped by peace and conflict. At the
Gallery we're marking the week with a series of great films and
talks exploring the theme.
This weekend is also your last
change to peek inside the weird inner workings of Ronnie van Hout's
mind. Be sure to visit the Gallery before 18 October, as we're now
into the final days of his popular and quirky exhibition
Ronnie van Hout: Who goes there.
Need a little help to remember
those dates? The Friends of Christchurch Art Gallery's 2010 calendar is now available, featuring
artists including Olivia Spencer Bower, Sir Toss Woollaston, Bill
Hammond and Tony de Lautour. It may not help with this fortnight's
engagements, but at just $20 it's the perfect Christmas gift!

Best known for his funny and
haunting variations on the self-portrait, Ronnie van Hout's brand of
absurdist sculpture unfolds here in a twisting journey past failed
robots, doll-sized portraits of the artist, shadowy rooms of memory
and something strange from Antarctica.

Séraphine Pick's original and
imaginative practice has made her one of New Zealand's most highly
regarded painters. From the spectral dresses, leaky baths and
teetering suitcases of the 1990s to the psychologically charged
dreamscapes of more recent years, this large-scale survey brings
together more than a hundred works made between 1994 and 2009.

Strange dreams, imaginary
landscapes, celestial structures and the outside world are themes
central to the practices of these nine contemporary New Zealand
artists. Exploring new directions in contemporary painting
techniques, the exhibition shimmers with colour and form and
explores the potential for art to transport us to other realms.
