EVENT HIGHLIGHTS: 1023 JUNE

June is here, which means it's time to celebrate Matariki (Māori New Year)! Join us at the Gallery for a wide range of events, including whetū (star) workshops and kapa haka performances.

Oh Baby, It's Art

9.30-10.15am, first Thursday of the month, starting 2 July 2009

Free guided tours for parents with babies.

Get your culture fix and encourage your baby's sense of wonder with a visit to the Gallery. Enjoy meeting other mums and dads and explore the exhibitions before the Gallery opens.

Wed 10  Tomorrow's Architectural Heritage: Professor Ian Lochhead

6pm, Philip Carter Family Auditorium, free

A discussion of the heritage value of post-war architecture. Professor Lochhead also looks at the destruction of our modern architectural heritage and unsympathetic changes to heritage buildings.

11-12noon and 1-2pm, education centre, free

Weave a whetū (star) in contemporary fibre. Part of our celebrations for Matariki (Māori New Year), this workshop is suitable for ages seven up.

Sun 14  Kapa Haka with Ngā Manu a Tane

1.30pm, foyer, free

Traditional Māori performing arts as part of our celebrations for Matariki (Māori New Year). The group Ngā Manu a Tane recently represented Canterbury at Te Matatini - the national senior kapa haka competition.

Miles: a life in architecture

Celebrating the achievements of leading New Zealand architect Sir Miles Warren, this exhibition reveals his contribution to modernist architecture and his success as a watercolourist and gardener.

Rita Angus: Life & Vision

Rita Angus is widely regarded as one of the leading New Zealand artists of the twentieth century. This exhibition features 143 works drawn from public and private collections throughout New Zealand and reveals the full scope of Angus's work throughout her career.

Nature's Own Voice

Nature's Own Voice focuses on plein-air painters - artists who work outdoors in an attempt to record the varying effects of differing light and weather conditions through direct observation.

Ron O'Reilly: The Collector's Eye

Nigerian sculptures meet paintings by 1950s and 1960s New Zealand modernists. Ron O'Reilly - Christchurch city librarian from 1951 to 1968 - is recognised as a significant champion of the arts.

Gary Hill: Up Against Down

Until 23 August

Gary Hill is world-renowned for his bold experiments with moving images. In this exhibition, he explores the paradoxes and difficulties of the human attempt to communicate. The best known of the works on show, Wall Piece is a high-impact fusion of light, language and body language.

White on White

Keeping younger audiences in mind, and including a number of new works by contemporary artists, White on White is an exhibition brimming with the imaginative possibilities of white.
