Event Highlights: 7 January – 20 January

Welcome to Christchurch Art Gallery's eNewsletter. With the school holidays well and truly underway, why not bring the children along to enjoy our school holiday programmes and treat yourself to a little quiet time in one of our thought-provoking exhibitions. A Wednesday evening highlight is our Water Garden Walk and Sketch, which involves not just a tour of the Botanic Gardens but the option of staying on to draw en plein-air.

Come and explore Fiona Hall: Force Field with this fun activity sheet. Fiona is an Australian artist who uses common household materials and objects to make her art, changing them to make us look at materials in a new way.

Cinema Classic: Humoresque (1946)

This classic tale has Joan Crawford as a married, promiscuous arts patron who is obsessed with talented young violinist John Garfield. She becomes his manager and sees him rise to the top of the music world, while he shuns her desires.

ART BITE Amazonical by Fiona Hall

Did you know that the giant leaves of the victoria amazonica water lily are so strong that a small child can sit on one without sinking into the water? Diane Swain examines this video work made on an expedition to Guyana and the artist's ongoing process of engaging with scientists and research into the natural world.

Water Garden Walk and Sketch

6pm, meet at the Museum entrance to the Botanic Gardens, free

Visit the beautiful Water Garden in bloom with this introduction from Botanic Gardens’ plant collection curator Dean Pendrigh, who demonstrates the variety of water lilies and plants that make up this stunning garden. Optional: BYO sketching requirements and stay on to draw plein-air.

Wunderbox brings together secretive spaces, model worlds and eccentric collections from some of New Zealand's best-known contemporary artists, including Judy Darragh, Andrew Drummond, Bill Hammond, Neil Pardington, Francis Upritchard, Terry Urbahn and Ronnie van Hout.

Fiona Hall: Force Field

Until 15 February 2009

Renowned Australian artist Fiona Hall explores the intersection of nature and culture, transforming ordinary objects such as sardine tins, videotapes and paper money into complex and evocative works of art. This spectacular survey includes works from the 1970s through to new works created especially for the exhibition.

Te Huringa / Turning Points

Pākehā Colonisation and Māori Empowerment

An exhibition of paintings from the collections of the Fletcher Trust and Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui, Te Huringa / Turning Points charts a journey from early European contact and colonisation through to work by present-day New Zealand artists reflecting contemporary concerns.
