Event Highlights: 3 – 16 September

Welcome to the Christchurch Art Gallery eNewsletter.

We've got a full and exciting programme of events on at the Gallery this fortnight.

Why not come down and enjoy our Wednesday Evenings programme – over the next two weeks you can hear a fascinating talk on Daniel Crooks's work, and take part in an insightful floortalk on the dazzling new Sara Hughes installation in the Gallery foyer with the artist herself.

Also, don't miss the upcoming Gallery fundraising lecture, featuring Dame Malvina Major talking about her life as an artist.

Sara Hughes's United We Fall Installation

Climb the stairs to the first floor and you'll find yourself accompanied along the way by a procession of high-intensity colours.

Together these colours make up United We Fall, an artwork by Sara Hughes that represents the first commission in the ‘Glasshouse' series – a programme of major new works for the Christchurch Art Gallery's foyer.

Daniel Crooks: The Future of the Past

Wed 3 September, 6pm

Laurence Simmons, Associate Professor of Film, Television and Media Studies at Auckland University, reveals the historical tradition of film and video image that Daniel Crooks’s work draws from.

 

Meet the Artist: Sara Hughes

Wed 10 September, 6pm

Recently returned from a year in the politically charged climate of America, Sara Hughes discusses her recent work, followed by a guided floortalk on her new installation in the Gallery foyer, United We Fall.

 

A Celebration of Community Arts Funding

Wed 10 September, 7pm

Creative New Zealand, Creative Communities and Christchurch Community Arts Council showcase a successful funded arts project with live dance performances, poetry reading and music.

Fundraising Lecture: Dame Malvina Major: My life as an artist

Dame Malvina, one of New Zealand’s best-known opera stars, will be talking about her life as an artist on stage. Proceeds go to the acquisitions programme at the Gallery.
