The total cost of building the Christchurch Art Gallery was NZ$47.5 million. The land was purchased in 1996 for NZ$9.6 million, greatly assisted by a major contribution of NZ$3.8 million from The Community Trust.

Christchurch City Council funded the majority of the project with NZ$37.14 million. The New Zealand Government contributed NZ$6.2 million, which represents 13% of the overall cost of the project, and a total of NZ$15.26 million was raised from external sources, including fundraising, grants and sponsorship.
